You’ve all spoken to her on the phone, you’ll all seen her around the hospital, heck; you’ve probably all even gotten one of her amazing hugs! We’re talking about our one and only Jessy.
Jess has been a fixture at Brentwood Bay Veterinary Clinic for roughly TWO decades (to answer your unspoken question no, she’s not old enough, she clearly started working here when she was in diapers) and we’d be lost without her. Since working her way up from a student position, Jessy has been our talented, exceptionally intelligent and implicitly trusted Veterinary Nurse for years with responsibilities that ranged from assisting clients and patients in every way possible, performing dental surgeries and monitoring anaesthetics for surgical procedures, to handling family members of the 4 legged variety for examinations or vaccines. Jess has been an invaluable member of the Brentwood Bay Family! Oh, and did we mention that, during her time with us, she somehow found the time to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in Biochemistry at the University of Saskatoon where she met her Husband Aaron with whom she shares two sons?
A few years ago, Jessy decided that she really wanted to become a registered/licensed Animal Health Technician and embarked on the gruelling (and yes, we do mean grueling!) process via the AHT Distance Education Program through Thompson Rivers University and, it certainly wasn’t always easy. Not only did Jessy have to juggle work and being a full time Mom (thankfully with a loving, supportive and helpful Husband) to two, growing, active teenage boys, but she now had to toss in another ‘ball’ so to speak that was.......SCHOOL. But, Jess did it. Of COURSE Jess did it! Jess knocked it out of the park!
The AHT Distance Education Program is a 3 ½ year course that involves MULTIPLE in-clinic Labs that the student must complete and MULTIPLE videos that they must prepare for, convince their coworkers to record for them/star in/work around them and or hold down the hospital during and, all the while the student still has the homework load that one would expect for, what is essentially a multi-species nursing degree........and yes, there are still mid-terms and final exams that the student still has to study for, stress over and take.
But Jessy did it. Jessy did the in-clinic Labs and she did the homework on top of the full time Mom-ing and on top of the full time Spouse-ing. Jessy convinced her coworkers (don’t worry, we were pretty easy to convince!) to record and sometimes star in her school videos. Jessy studied for her exams during spare moments at work, before picking her sons up from school and various sports events, in the evenings and, Jessy did it. And oh my goodness did she ever do it! Not ever content to do anything halfway, Jess even went and earned herself the Academic Award for her Graduating Class as well!
So please, join us in congratulating Jess when you see her because as of April 11th 2018, Jessy is now Brentwood Bay Veterinary Clinic’s REGISTERED Animal Health Technician and we couldn’t possibly be any prouder of our Family Member!!
